A Personal Sibling Reveal

I'm going to share a very personal event in my life with you all. My brother is moving out of state and my heart is aching, seriously aching.

I've often heard of sibling rivalry, but I can honestly say that I have never felt that. I have always admired and wished/hoped to be as strong, intelligent and independent as my brother. There being only two of us as siblings and losing my father to cancer at the age of 10, I've always looked up to him for protection and guidance. I realize today that that might have been a burden for him as he was growing into his manhood and probably still deals with it today. He is the male figure that replaced my fathers at a very early age for quite sometime. So, in short Nelson got shafted.

I've always been very close to him despite being in different boarding schools 100's of miles apart during our adolescent years. But I can tell you; no one has ever replaced or come close to loving him as I love him. He knows me the best. He knows what makes me sad, anxious, nervous, scared and happy. Seldom do we ever have a person in our life that can tune in to our feelings and my blessing is that it's my brother. The person I will have the longest relationship with.

I can recall when I was 6 or 7 yrs old and our father was in NYC receiving cancer treatment at The Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan while we were in Santo Domingo for a week w/ my aunt Atala. We were scheduled to fly out to NYC and stay with our grandmother Mama while my mother tended to dad in the city.

So, we prepared for our 1600 mile flight across the three seas. Nelson helped me pack and made sure all my dolls and sneakers were packed away. We checked in at the airport. I was half his size and very much the curious type in short I was very spirited. I'm certain, I must of been a challenge for him to control but like most things Nelsons does, he managed effortlessly. He held on to my hand and walked me through the crowd on to the plane, surrendered his window seat to me which I love till this day. He made sure I was buckled in, had a teeny white pillow and a fresh blanket. I remember my nose being plastered to the window of the plane watching everything that happen outside. Nelson read the "in case of emergency landing" pamphlets and went over them with me. Then he tentatively listened to the flight attendant go over the procedures and oxygen  mask application instructions.

WOW! I was so excited to be flying home to see my papi and mami, I kept squirming in my seat. Shortly after the flight took off Nelson took me to the bathroom and waited patiently outside. I don't recall whether he ever used the bathroom. I suspect he didn't want to take his eyes off of me.

That was the first time I realized that my brother was my protector and that I could with out a doubt count on him. And Nelson has never let me down. I've had the best relationship of my life with him. I don't remember a time I wasn't proud to call him my brother!

Now as grow older; that bond has strengthen. I still remember that little girl holding hands w/ her brother, looking up at him as he guides her along a crowed airport full of people and many unknowns yet, she knows that her brother will always be there no matter what the challenge or distance.

Nelson, I am proud of you, your strength, your nobility, your smarts and your courage. I am excited about your new journey and knowing that you will make the best of it. You have never disappointed. As the years go by I know that you are the person that will I know my whole life and the person that I will continue to grow closes to. My heart will ache from your physical absence but it will be filled with thoughts that you are pursuing your dreams and aiming towards a bigger goal. I can't wait to follow you soon! Shine and make your mark.

Take on Boston!

From a sister to a brother.

While my aunts been here... I've managed to do a bit of shopping. Well, really window shopping.

This little store we found in Battle Creek, Mi. You wouldn't believe the jems he had sitting around. They were over priced for what I'm used to paying or like to pay, but hey! he's in it for the bottom line. I'm in it to create and feed my addiction to re-purposing.

This dresser was priced above $600. *moving on*

Hutch $1500

Crosby radio sporting missing knobs, missing back, water damaged covered by the junk on top $150

None working Radio with missing backing $350

Broken lunch box with replaced handled $10 the painted one on the back $25

Look at the sea of vintage furniture. Gosh I sure hope this place doesn't catch on fire or flood because although he is over priced... some of his pieces are beautiful.

Sorry this has nothing to do w/ DIYing or such, but I want to share my obsession...@DonnieWahlberg who's featured in @Jordan Knight (who looks pretty hawt himself) new vid #Stingy =D

ENJOY!

Jordan Knight "Stingy" feat. Donnie Wahlberg by MassAppealGermany

I love how it reminds me of the days when I was 17 yrs and I couldn't part w/ my @DonnieWahlberg pillow =D

It's MY Birthday!!!

YO! it's my Bday!!!

I'm blessed for having such great kids. They are fun, respectful, smart, leaders, outgoing, gentle, controlled and they are always welcomed and loved no matter where they go.

I'm blessed for having a great family that stand behind me. My brother is a flipping genius! He is brilliant, strong, elegant, educated, kind, lovable... I could go on. My mom is smart, she's an educator. With out her the family sorta gets weak but she has a tough exterior but she's so fragile only we know it =D. My dad is centered, spiritual, calm, pensive and always ready to give LOVE.

I have a nice house, a great job, loyal friends, crazy loving family. What else could I ask for? How about a boyfriend!!! is Donnie Wahlberg available?

Whoopee forgive me while I take a breather from all my @DonnieWahlberg thoughts... Pssst make sure to follow him on tweeter. He's so inspiring and his WOW's are moving... they are always spot on, but avoid the crazy chicks on there. They will drive you crazy w/ their constant @NKOTB talk. It's as if that's all they do and think about... But the @DonnieWahlberg followers are a riot!

Okay back to my BDay. PARTY!

WOW! it's been far too long!

I have so many updates for you. So, much has happen in the last few months. I can't believe I even have time to blog today.

1. We didn't go to Disney as my last post shows *sad face* But we did replace that w/ summer camp, Myrtle Beach, Chicago and family reunion in New York. Whoooeeee it's been FUN!

2. Nelson (my 11 yr old) went to summer camp for the 3rd yr in a row and loved it. He made so many friends in it and they will be getting together at my house the in the next week. Just imagine a basement, back yard and street w/ 5 12 yrs boys. It will be nuts!!! WHHHAAAA

3. Myrtle Beach; was okay. I wasn't impressed or blown away by it. In fact; It's a closer Florida YUCK! I will only return if it's CHEAP. Otherwise, blah. There are other places I rather go. Like Denver, New Mexico, San Diego, New York, New Orleans, etc.

4. Chicago was an easy day trip to IKEA. I came back with a new bed which I will be sharing in the couple of days. YAY for IKEA!!! =D

5. NEW YORK; I am in love w/ this city. I always say if you haven't been to NYC you haven't been anywhere! and I mean that. It is beautiful. Full of life. Everything is eclectic and energized plus, all my family still lives there and most in New Jersey. I can't wait to return. I will be posting pics very soon...

So, if you haven't noticed I've been a little overwhelmed this summer w/ kids, summer activities, projects, work, mini vacations, shopping for a new car, shopping for a new house, planning our family trip to Italy next yr. and life in general. I promise to come back w/ a BANG! so hold on to your nickers cause I'm going to share every bit of information w/ you!!! WHOOOOEEEE

PS: I've been told by many a people to write a monthly blog on child rearing and I'm seriously considering it. But I will be sure to let everyone know if I decide to do this and if I do would really like for everyone to participate and make it more of a discussion or open forum on tips, advice and support for moms.

Love!!!

We're Going to DISNEY!!

SHHH the boys don't know it yet, but I've been planing it the last couple of weeks and we are on our way... =D

Love being a travel agent and the perks that come w/ it. Love having friends w/ time shares. Love that my 6 yr. old will go NUTS when he sees the tickets. Love that I waited this long to take them. Love that I won't be in Michigan. Love that it'll be warm in FL. Love that we will see Mickey =D

I've never been to Disney. Honesty never cared to because I'm a city girl! But knowing how happy the boys will be is my only motivation.

We will be staying in a condo 3 miles from Disney and we are getting 2 day passes w/ all access. YAY!!

In a couple of weeks when I give the boys the tickets I will record it and share... Stay tuned! =D

Let me know what tips or suggestions you might have for me... I love hearing from you!!

This weeks finds

I went treasure hunting w/ Cheri I didn't find anything too over the top, but I did manage to find a Longaberger set of 2 mini candles- evergreen orange for .30 cents  YAY! Sure beats THIS

I know Christmas is over w/ and the jars have the small snow flakes on them, but they smell delish and I put them up high on the entertainment center so you can't even tell.

... this great topiary flower form will be fun to work with this weekend =D

... this awesome SureFit love seat slipcover which I don't know that I will keep since it's removed from what I really like. What do you think?

Best find of the week
I'm going to YUCK to this cover... didn't fit at all and it makes the couch look like my G'mas couch =D

My camera died so, I used the phone sorry 'bout the bad pictures. But these slipcovers are a NO GO!

All in all it was a good week for finds. Although, I'm still on the hunt for that gentlemen dresser or armoire that I can paint white.

Painting tips from a not so pro

I've done a lot of painting this past year. Wow, I wonder all in all how many gallons of paint I've gone thru. Must have been about 20 or more. But I bet some of you have probably used even more then that.

So, I have a little tip for you. Line your paint tray w/ a plastic bag or saran wrap. I opt for the plastic bag I bring home from the grocery store. I always save them (specially because I will use them for a summer project).

It started to unravel, but you want to make sure it's on securely to give you a smooth roll. I sometimes use tape.

When finished just fold over the bag and voila! you are all done. The only thing left to do is wash your brushes and maybe replace your foam rollers (I still haven't mastered washing and reusing those). When I figure out an easy way to get the foam rollers cleaned up I'll share those w/ you.

Good as new! And I just saved a couple of bucks by lining it w/ plastic bags. Can't wait to see how you guys put this to use.

Next tip:

Paint w/ a wet brush. It stops the paint from getting all the way down to the handle (Yuck! this makes it hard to clean).

I know, I know. I wasn't sure about this one, but I promise... It works! I seriously managed to get the brush clean w very little water YAY!! Think Smart. Think Green!

What tips do you have for making painting easier?

Put them out here! =D

Family and stuff is taking over my bloggy time

Oh boy! am I glad the holidays are over!! I thought it would end... lol

I have resolved to start the year off w/ a different financial plan and that has taken over a lot of my time. Not to mention family and friends over the holidays... now we are back to "normal" or as normal as we can be.

The plan this year is to increase savings and plan a couple of trips for this summer w/ the boys. I've been consumed w/ making this happen so, I've spent a lot of time on CL selling a lot of the extra goodies I've collected over the years thru GW and CL.

Unexpectedly I've even agreed to painting some of the pieces for the buyers... so normally what I did as a hobby or a means to save a piece and money has somehow turned into extra income. Has this happen to any of you?

This is the coffee table that started it all

I'm painting it white and she requested lightly distressed... Sshhhh I'm not an expert distressed. But I told her that I will attempt to do my best. She also wanted the glass knobs that I have so, I charged her an extra $10 for them. In the end I guess this will help w/ this summers family trip.

Well, I best get back to painting.

But I will be sure to share the final results and what she thought of her coffee table.

BTW,

Happy 2011!! When dreams till come true =D

Whowouldathought we like Decals

I never knew that the boys would enjoy making plagues w/ decals... who knew they liked to get so involved in mami's little projects and I terribly enjoy having them help.

Check out what we came up w/

Here's what I found at the local GW. It was partially FREE! Teehee

We laid it on an Ikea sage green plate that I got this summer and sprayed it white. Then Jacob and I used a ruler (his because he wanted it no other way) and made sure the line would be perfect for the decal. We laid it down and I had Jacob run his fingers and nails over it to secure it.

Then he carefully started to peel it back. He's such a great little teeny helper.

Pausing for a final check, he was convinced it wasn't on straight, but we agreed that it was.

Jacob was taking too long so I took it upon myself to peel it off. I did it very very slowly!

Nelson choose the word hope out of the Hope. Faith. Love.

Fin! I love how simplistic it is.  Please, ignore the unfinished back splash, that is to come soon enough =)

I hope you'll keep stopping by since the boys have a couple more decal projects they want to do that they talked me into =)

Shopping on Black Friday Shopping Reminders

Woot Woot, it's getting to be that time of the year! I'm excited to get w/ my friends and shop shop shop =)
This year it's all about the toys! I usually focus on home repairs, but PFFT! I'm getting it done for the boys... That's the goal.

Here are some last minute reminders;
1. Check Out the Ads & Print them Out; don't forget the ads at home!!

2. Research Every Item your Little Heart Desires

3. Compare all Ads! Don't Forget the Anchor Stores; just because they might not advertise as much does not  mean they are not holding a BLACK Friday sale.

4. Check Out the Early Bird Specials; that sometimes start on Thanksgiving Day and BLACK Friday from 3 a.m. until 11 a.m

5. Online Shopping; you can keep warm and shop from home right after midnight and on some sites like Amazon.com get even better deals. I'm doing that as well as heading out to ze stores.
6. Gift Receipts; Always get the receipt!!
7. The most important tip I received from Cheri @ Bargain Decor Mom was to come up w/ a plan of attack. And we have! We will be carrying our HUGE Ikea bags (in case we can't get carts in time), small bottle of water and an over the shoulder purse (big enough for the folded ads and wallets) what else do you think might be needed?

NOTE: Here's a bit of BLACK Friday history see it HERE on Wikipedia or read below

History

One of the earliest recorded uses was September 24, 1869 was deemed Black Friday; a day of stock market catastrophe. The history of the day after Thanksgiving being the official start of the holiday shopping season may be linked together with the idea of Santa Claus parades. Parades celebrating Thanksgiving often include an appearance by Santa at the end of the parade, with the idea that 'Santa has arrived' or 'Santa is just around the corner'.
In the late 19th century and early 20th century, many Santa parades or Thanksgiving Day parades were sponsored by department stores. These include the Toronto Santa Claus Parade, in Canada, sponsored by Eaton's, and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade sponsored by Macy's. Department stores would use the parades to launch a big advertising push. Eventually it just became an unwritten rule that no store would try doing Christmas advertising before the parade was over. Therefore, the day after Thanksgiving became the day when the shopping season officially started.
Later on, the fact that this marked the official start of the shopping season led to controversy. In 1939, retail shops would have liked to have a longer shopping season, but no store wanted to break with tradition and be the one to start advertising before Thanksgiving. President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the date for Thanksgiving one week earlier, leading to much anger by the public who wound up having to change holiday plans.[20] Some even refused the change, resulting in the U.S. citizens celebrating Thanksgiving on two separate days.[20] Some started referring to the change as Franksgiving.
